Xi'an–Almaty International Tourist Train Arrives in Almaty

An international tourist train traveling from Xi'an (PRC) to Almaty has arrived in Almaty. The project is being implemented as part of railway tourism development and the expansion of travel connections between Kazakhstan and China.

The latest tourist train departed from Xi'an on September 14. The route follows the historic Great Silk Road through China's northwestern regions and Xinjiang, crossing the Kazakh-Chinese border via Khorgos.

Within Kazakhstan, the tourist transportation was organized by JSC Passenger Transportation. A specialized train schedule was developed to ensure the international tourist train's smooth transit, taking border clearance procedures and the technical alignment of the two countries' railway networks into account.

"The development of tourist trains is of strategic importance to us. Railways allow the creation of full-scale tourism routes that connect cities, regions, and both historical and natural sites. Our goal, together with our foreign partners, is to develop this format, expand the travel geography across Kazakhstan, and create a high-quality tourism product for passengers," noted Anuar Akhmetzhanov, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC Passenger Transportation.

A cultural and sightseeing program has been arranged for the guests during their stay in Almaty, allowing tourists to explore the history, culture, and natural landmarks of the city. The itinerary includes the Independence Monument, the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, the Ascension Cathedral, the Central Mosque, Kok-Tobe, Shymbulak, the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and other tourist attractions.

The first international tourist train on the Xi'an–Almaty route was launched by the Chinese side in 2025. In June 2026, the first trip utilizing the National Carrier's trains took place. The current journey marks the second trip of 2026.

The project is being developed as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Kazakh-Chinese tourism cooperation and promote Kazakhstan as a travel destination.
