What a passenger needs to know when transporting pets on trains

JSC "Passenger Transportation" reminds passengers of the rules for transporting animals on trains. To ensure a comfortable and safe journey with a domestic pet, it is recommended to familiarize oneself with the established requirements in advance.

The procedure for transporting animals is defined by Chapter 10 of the Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, Cargo Baggage, and Postal Shipments by Rail, which specifies the list of animals allowed for transportation, as well as the procedure and conditions of their carriage.

In passenger trains, passengers are allowed to carry only domestic pets with them, and their number must not exceed two (cats, dogs, birds, guide dogs). The transportation of domestic animals and birds is permitted only upon presentation of the appropriate veterinary documents. These must be produced during boarding.

To travel on a passenger train with animals, it is necessary to purchase an entire compartment (kupe) to ensure the safety of other passengers from potential allergic reactions. If the owner of the animal is not present, boarding the train is impossible.

Responsibility for the pets rests solely with their owners. They must keep them in special containers (crates, boxes, baskets) and monitor their transportation at stations, during boarding/disembarkation, and inside the train itself. Owners must feed and clean up after their four-legged friends. Large dogs must be muzzled and kept on a leash. When traveling with a large dog, a baggage tariff applies, calculated based on the animal's weight. Large dogs must be placed exclusively in the non-working vestibule (tambour) of the first carriage. The pet owner bears full responsibility for its accompaniment and safety during the trip.

A guide dog accompanying its visually impaired owner may travel in any type of carriage. No additional fee is charged for the guide dog. Furthermore, animals are not permitted to enter dining cars.

Animals that pose a threat to the life and health of passengers and train employees are prohibited from transportation.

The national carrier requests passengers to plan their trips with pets well in advance and to consult on the conditions of animal travel by calling the toll-free number 1433, as well as at station ticket offices.
