What Can You Take with You on a Train: KTZ Clarifies Oversized Baggage Allowance Rules

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) clarifies the rules for transporting hand luggage and oversized items in passenger trains for passengers, as part of implementing the "Law and Order" concept and conducting the nationwide campaign "Safe Railway."

In standard carriages, a passenger can carry hand luggage free of charge weighing up to 35 kg and measuring no more than 100 × 50 × 50 cm.

In Talgo and similar carriages, free hand luggage is allowed up to 25 kg and measuring no more than 70 × 40 × 40 cm.

Bicycles without an electric motor, baby strollers, and kayaks can be transported disassembled and packed, provided they fit into the designated hand luggage space. This rule does not apply to Talgo carriages.

Items that exceed the established hand luggage limits are classified as oversized. They must be registered in advance as checked baggage. Transportation is carried out in the baggage compartment or a universal baggage car, depending on the type of train and its technical capabilities. Skis are not allowed to be transported in passenger carriages.

KTZ reminds passengers that baggage must not obstruct aisles, doors, or passenger seats, nor create obstacles for other passengers.

In addition, if excess hand luggage is detected, passengers have the option to check it into the baggage car on "Talgo" passenger trains for an additional fee:

• No. 9/10 "Nurly Zhol – Almaty-2";
• No. 81/82 "Nurly Zhol – Oral";
• No. 65/66 "Nurly Zhol – Kyzylorda".

The procedure for transporting baggage and hand luggage is established by the Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, and Cargo Baggage by Railway Transport, approved by Order No. 545 of the Minister for Investments and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated April 30, 2015.
