Ports of Kuryk and Makhachkala sign cooperation agreement

10-06-2026

Representatives of Port Kuryk LLP took part in the XXIX St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (RF). On the sidelines of the forum, Turlan Medina, Executive Director for Marketing and Logistics at Port Kuryk LLP, and Dzhamal Aliev, Director General of the Port of Makhachkala, signed a Cooperation Agreement on organizing car ferry transportation between the ports of Kuryk and Makhachkala.

The main objective of the signed Agreement is to redirect cargo flows from the China – Central Asia – Port of Turkmenbashi direction to a route passing through the ports of Kuryk (Republic of Kazakhstan) and Makhachkala (Russian Federation). The implementation of the reached agreements will contribute to the formation of effective logistical solutions, opening up new prospects for the development of both ports and transport market participants.

The parties also expressed interest in further expanding mutually beneficial cooperation, including the development of a transport route through the seaports of Kuryk and Makhachkala. This route creates additional logistical opportunities for organizing cargo transportation between Europe and Asia and contributes to strengthening international transport links.

As a reminder, Port Kuryk is located on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea, south of the Port of Aktau, in the Bekovich-Cherkassky Bay, which provides more favorable weather conditions for cargo handling operations, particularly railcar roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) operations. The ferry complex is oriented toward the transshipment of grain, petroleum products, fertilizers, chemicals, and other types of cargo.

In turn, the Port of Makhachkala (RF) is the only ice-free and deepest port of Russia on the Caspian Sea, serving as a link connecting the transport system of southern Russia with the states of Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Iran, and other countries of the Caspian region. Currently, the Makhachkala Commercial Seaport possesses 12 berths, three dry cargo terminals, and four auxiliary fleet vessels for cargo transshipment and transportation.
