Over 77 million tons of coal transported across KTZ network since beginning of the year
09-10-2026
Coal transportation remains under the special control of KTZ. During the first 9 months of 2026, over 77 million tons of coal were transported by rail. This is 900,000 tons more than in the same period last year. Export shipments reached 24 million tons (+300,000 tons), while more than 53 million tons were transported within Kazakhstan (+600,000 tons).
Since the start of the heating season preparation, from May 1 to September 30 of this year, 28 million tons of coal were transported across the republic, matching the level of the same period last season. Out of this total, 25.8 million tons were delivered to combined heat and power plants (CHPs), and 2.3 million tons were allocated for domestic and communal needs. Coal reserves at the country's CHPs remain at or above standard required levels.
The planned regional demand for domestic and communal coal for the May–September period, totaling 2.3 million tons, has been fully met.
For the entire heating season, the planned supply stands at 7.3 million tons of domestic and communal coal, including volumes transported by road. This is 154,000 tons less than last year's figure. The decrease is due to the rising level of gasification across the regions.
There is no shortage of rolling stock. Shippers' requests are being fulfilled in full volume.
Approximately 18,500 gondola cars belonging to JSC Kaztemirtrans are deployed for coal transportation. In total, 27,000 gondola cars are under operation. During peak load periods, an additional reserve of up to 3,000 gondola cars is mobilized.
To ensure operational monitoring of transportation since the start of the heating season, weekly meetings of the Republican Headquarters for Domestic and Communal Coal Transportation are held at the Ministry of Energy.
An Operational Headquarters for Coal Transportation is active within KTZ. It comprises over 60 specialists from the central headquarters and regional divisions. The headquarters monitors the loading and delivery of coal from each coal mine to the country's regions on a 24/7 basis.
