Over 400 KTZ locomotives equipped with trip optimizer smart system

12-01-2026

Trip Optimizer is a digital automated train control system that operates on the principle of "smart" cruise control. The technology helps optimize train movement: once activated, it executes the trip plan by automatically selecting the most efficient operating mode.

KTZ is implementing this smart system on freight locomotives. To date, 425 Trip Optimizer kits have been installed at service centers in Aktobe, Makat, Sekseul, and Ayagoz. To enable data transmission, 385 mobile operator SIM cards were integrated into the equipment, and the modems themselves underwent mandatory verification on the state portal. Currently, a scheduled software update for the modems is underway across the entire equipped locomotive fleet to ensure stable connectivity and uninterrupted system operation.

In real-time, the system compares the train's coordinates with a digital track map, taking into account gradients, curves, and speed restrictions. The software analyzes the train's technical parameters - such as mass, length, number of cars, and locomotive characteristics—and independently controls traction and dynamic brakes based on this data. This approach eliminates the human factor, resulting in significant fuel savings, strict schedule adherence, and a reduced workload for train drivers.

Today, Trip Optimizer technology is recognized as an international standard and is utilized by more than 20 of the world's largest railway operators.
