Modernized double-track section connected to Altynkol station
05-10-2026
On the Iintal–Altynkol section, the main works to connect the second track to the Altynkol station have been completed. Following the switchover of signaling, centralization, and blocking systems, train traffic has been opened on both tracks.
The works were performed during a scheduled technological "window." Upon completion of the works, the first train to pass through the modernized section was a freight train from China traveling through the Altynkol–Khorgos border crossing toward Almaty. Shortly after, a train proceeded in the opposite direction. Traffic has been restored according to schedule.
The domestic MPC-QZ microprocessor interlocking system has been put into operation on both tracks along the Iintal–Altynkol section.
"The introduction of MPC-QZ on both tracks will increase throughput capacity and ensure traffic safety on the Iintal–Altynkol section," noted Daulet Mukanov, Deputy Head of the Almaty Branch of the Mainline Network.
Taking into account previously completed works, the modernization of the 298-km Zhelygen–Altynkol railway line is nearly finished. Five new passing loops have been constructed along the line, and track development has been carried out at seven existing ones. Second tracks were built on the limiting Iintal–Altynkol and Zhetygen–Kurozek sections, spanning a total length of 32 km.
The modernization began in April 2025. Its primary objective is to increase the section's throughput capacity and enhance capabilities for transit traffic growth.
Works continue at the Altynkol station. A new inspection and screening complex, a shunting hump, and an automated hump interlocking post are under construction. The readiness of the automated hump interlocking post stands at 90%. Additionally, the construction of four extra 1435 mm gauge tracks is nearing completion.
Upon full project completion, the section's throughput capacity is expected to increase to 33 train pairs per day. This will accelerate cargo transportation and boost Kazakhstan's capabilities in developing international transit routes.
"The completion of works on the line from Zhetygen to Altynkol is an important milestone for the railway industry. Following the modernization of the Altynkol station, the section will be able to more reliably accommodate the growing transit flow," noted Honored Railway Worker and "Kazakhstanian Enbek Eri" (Hero of Labor of Kazakhstan) Kaltay Sambetov.
