KTZ Introduced the Passenger Train Digital Ecosystem
20-10-2026
The national carrier has implemented a large-scale project to equip passenger trains with Starlink satellite internet. The digital infrastructure covers over 1,500 carriages across 51 routes [1, 2] and will provide internet access and modern digital services to more than 11 million passengers annually.
The project results and development plans for the passenger train's digital ecosystem were presented at the Nurly Zhol railway station in Astana. During the presentation, train conductors joined the event online while en route, demonstrating the operation of the onboard Wi-Fi.
"JSC 'Passenger Transportation' is actively implementing digitalization projects today. Their result will be the formation of a full-fledged digital ecosystem combining communication infrastructure, information systems, and services for passengers. This will allow us to provide a wide range of services at all stages of the journey, making them more accessible and convenient for people," noted Anuar Akhmetzhanov, Chairman of the Management Board of JSC "Passenger Transportation".
Passengers will have access to free basic internet and paid packages. The basic package is designed for text messaging in messengers. Paid packages will be offered for photos, videos, voice messages, and other internet services.
Sapar, a robot conductor, introduced visitors to the Wi-Fi connection during the presentation. It greeted passengers and explained how to use the onboard network.
Satellite internet will become the foundation for accessing new services while traveling. In parallel, KTZ is developing an Information System called the "National Passenger Transportation System." According to Merey Yernurov, Director of the Digital Transformation Directorate at the BTS Digital LLP branch, the system will consolidate data on passengers, trains, tickets, routes, and services. It will simplify and optimize the work of passenger services while helping to increase the efficiency of carriers' operational, commercial, and financial decisions.
Passengers will access these services through the SuperApp mobile application, which is currently under development. In the app, users can search for routes, check schedules, select seats, and buy tickets. During the trip, they will be able to receive notifications, use additional services, and contact customer support.
The Starlink satellite internet has become a vital component of the passenger train infrastructure, enabling the operation of modern digital services and technological solutions. It integrates onboard Wi-Fi networks, inter-carriage connections, and centralized equipment management. The technical solutions are adapted for various types of train sets.
"Our task is not just to connect trains to satellite internet, but to create a reliable and scalable infrastructure capable of operating effectively on routes of various lengths," noted Igor Pogrebitsky, a representative of JSC "Transtelecom."
Digital solutions will allow for the analysis of passenger traffic, demand research, service quality assessment, and faster response times to feedback. Data integration will help identify systemic issues and guide decisions to improve passenger service.
