KTZ is implementing innovations for safe and efficient transportation

31-03-2026

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) is actively implementing innovative technologies to increase network capacity and transportation safety. Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, Marat Shakenov, spoke about the company's key projects at a government meeting.

Over the past five years, KTZ has completed more than 50 research projects, including seven in 2025. Together with ALT University, KTZ opened road management and energy laboratories to train railway specialists. In 2025, a design bureau was established within KTZ to implement innovative projects.

The digital train traffic control system, AIMAK RAIL, was implemented on the Karagayly-Kokpekty section. In December 2025, a project to implement the Starlink satellite system on a 247-kilometer section began, increasing capacity from 4 to 7 pairs of trains per day and enabling the transportation of over 5 million tons of freight per year. A test run is planned for April 2026.

Hybrid shunting locomotives with a diesel-electric system and battery packs are being introduced. They save fuel, reduce emissions by 20%, and increase efficiency by 15%.

To improve safety, Wabtec's Kinetix diagnostic system is being used, reducing freight car inspection time from 2 hours to 8 minutes. The first set has been installed on the Astana-Sorokovaya section, and five more will be installed in 2026.

On the Koktuma-Siding No. 16 section, a joint project with Japanese specialists, RIKEN Kogyo, is being implemented to reduce wind loads and snow drifts. The goal is to ensure uninterrupted train service in challenging weather conditions.

Two digital solutions are being implemented under the KTZ Ventures program:

Multicode automates transportation management and reduces approval times from three days to six hours;
Freelancity identifies bottlenecks in the rail network and improves shift and daily planning.

In 2025, KTZ participated in the Samruk Innovation Hub competition and the Samruk-Kazyna Foundation's "Best Innovative Company" project, where it won prizes.
