KTZ: first multimodal transportation of chemical products from Japan to Kazakhstan organized
04-09-2026
KTZ Express, a subsidiary of JSC "NC "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy", is expanding the geography of international transportation by connecting new Asian routes to the transport and logistics system of Kazakhstan. The company organized the first multimodal transportation of containers with chemical products from the Japanese port of Kobe to Almaty.
The route, with a total length of about 6,000 km, includes sea and rail sections: from the port of Kobe, containers travel by sea for about 1,620 km to Lianyungang (PRC), where, after customs clearance, the cargo is transferred to the railway and travels for another 4,400 km to Almaty. At the border of China and Kazakhstan, through the Altynkol checkpoint, the containers are reloaded onto rolling stock of the Kazakhstani gauge, after which the movement continues to the final destination.
Lianyungang is one of the key links in the transport infrastructure of KTZ Express in East Asia. The "Kazakhstan-China International Logistics Company in Lianyungang" is located at the port—a joint terminal project of Kazakhstan and China launched in 2014 as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. Through this hub, Kazakhstani cargo flows gain access to international sea routes connecting Kazakhstan, China, and East Asian markets.
The route from Kobe to Almaty demonstrates that the potential of such connectivity can be utilized not only for cargo from China but also for connecting other countries of the Pacific region to overland routes through the territory of China and Kazakhstan.
