Freight traffic volume between Kazakhstan and Russia demonstrates growth

At the end of 2025, railway cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation showed positive dynamics: the total volume of freight traffic reached 92.1 million tons, which is 3.5% higher than the level of 2024.

The main contribution to this growth came from transit operations. The export of Russian cargo through the territory of Kazakhstan increased by 16.1%, reaching 17.3 million tons. Meanwhile, the export of Kazakhstani cargo in transit through Russia grew by 20.4%, totaling 21.5 million tons.

The key driver for the development of freight flows was the Intergovernmental Agreement on Transit Rail Freight, signed in Moscow in November 2025. This agreement is already demonstrating a practical effect and creating the foundation for further expansion of cooperation.

The results of the first 4 months of 2026 confirm the effectiveness of the measures taken. The export of Kazakhstani cargo (coal, ferrous metals, fertilizers) in transit through the Russian Federation increased by 70,000 tons, reaching 7 million tons. At the same time, the volume of Russian cargo shipped to or through Kazakhstan (petroleum products, ferrous metals, grain, food products) exceeded 12 million tons, showing a growth of around 20%.
