KTZ actively modernizes its main rail network

27-05-2026

KTZ is implementing the largest program to modernize the main rail network (MRN) since Kazakhstan gained independence. In 2025–2026, the modernization covers 3,000 km of track sections, accounting for 25% of the country's entire main rail network. To date, 1,140 km, or 38% of the planned volume, has been completed.

The project framework includes:

  • construction of 27 new passing loops (siding tracks);
  • construction of 6 additional yards at major stations;
  • laying of 15 new tracks at existing passing loops;
  • construction of 32 km of double tracks on the busiest sections.

In parallel, a digital transformation of the train traffic management system is underway.

Specifically, it provides for:

  • implementation of digital automatic block signaling on 2,188 km of tracks on the Aksu – Zhana-Semey, Tobol – Kandyagash, Kyzylzhar – Sekseul, and Shalkar – Beyneu sections;
  • integration of 98 stations with the digital automatic block signaling system;
  • upgrading Zhana-Semey, Shalkar, and Beyneu stations from 1950s-era relay interlocking systems to microprocessor-based computer-based interlocking (CBI), including the replacement of 213 switches (turnouts);
  • integration of 38 relay and 60 microprocessor-controlled stations into a single digital system;
  • modernization of three sorting (classification) systems at the key stations of Altynkol, Zhana-Semey, and Saksaulskaya.

Following the modernization, the share of track sections with semi-automatic block signaling will drop by 55%, from 3,973 km to 1,785 km. This will mark a major milestone in the digital transformation of Kazakhstan's railway industry.

The implementation of the project will significantly enhance train traffic safety, increase infrastructure capacity, and ensure the sustainability of the transportation process.

Work is currently underway on seven network sections simultaneously. In terms of the scale and volume of operations, this project is unprecedented in the entire history of Kazakhstan's railways.
