Implementation of Key Railway Projects Discussed in Abay Region
27-04-2026
A working meeting was held in Abay Region with the participation of KTZ Chairman of the Management Board Talgat Aldybergenov and the regional akim Berik Uali on the implementation of key regional railway infrastructure projects. Representatives of local executive bodies and company employees also participated in the discussion.
Key projects discussed included the construction of the 303-km Bakhty-Ayagoz railway line, the modernization of the Aksu-Zhana-Semey section (352 km), the renovation of 10 railway stations and the construction of affordable housing for industry workers.
Construction of the Bakhty-Ayagoz Line
The project is being implemented within the framework of the instructions of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to develop the country's transport and transit potential. The new line will increase throughput capacity on the Kazakhstan-China route by 20 million tons, reduce the burden on existing southern border crossings, and attract additional transit traffic.
The project is of strategic importance for the region and will be a driver of its socioeconomic development. Approximately 1,200 jobs are expected to be created, along with additional benefits for related industries. Meeting participants emphasized the need for close coordination among all parties involved.
Railway Infrastructure Modernization
Modernization of the 352-km Aksu-Zhan-Semey section, including the renovation of the Zhana-Semey station, is ongoing in the region. Completion of the section is expected this summer, and the station in the fall.
Over the past five years, approximately 530 km of railway tracks have been repaired in the region. The systematic replacement of wooden sleepers with reinforced concrete ones continues, increasing the reliability and service life of the infrastructure. Station Renovation
Renovation of railway stations
A renovation project is underway at 10 railway stations in the region: Semey and Ayagoz, as well as at Aktogay, Degelen, Shar, Ushbiik, Zharma, Aul, Belagash, and Zhalanashkol.
Contractors have been tasked with preserving the historical appearance of the facilities, taking into account the architectural features of the region. Key emphasis is being placed on improving passenger comfort and safety: modern waiting rooms are being built, barrier-free environments are being implemented, and navigation is being improved.
Construction of Affordable Social Housing for Production Personnel
KTZ together with Otbasy Bank is launching the first phase of an affordable housing program aimed at improving the living conditions of the company's employees. This initiative will offer preferential housing options, with priority given to production personnel—those working on the line and ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the railway. The first stage, starting in 2026, will cover the cities of Karaganda, Pavlodar, Semey, Kostanay, and Astana, which are experiencing high staff turnover and a shortage of railway specialists.
Construction of affordable housing for employees is underway in Semey.
