Since the beginning of 2026, KTZ locomotive crews have prevented 39 road traffic accidents at railway crossings. In all cases, drivers of motor vehicles created dangerous situations by driving onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train, failing to comply with signaling requirements, or being unable to clear the crossing in time due to vehicle malfunction.
The professionalism and attentiveness of the drivers made it possible to avoid collisions. However, to stop the trains, emergency braking had to be applied.
On August 29, on the Matai – Aktogay section, a freight train was traveling at a speed of 37 km/h. At the Karatas – Kokshalgyn crossing, the driver noticed a KamAZ truck, applied service braking 300 meters ahead, and prevented a collision. The driver of the truck subsequently drove away from the scene. The train delay amounted to 18 minutes. The information was forwarded to the police at Ushtobe station.
On August 27, on the Kokshetau – Dzhamantuz section, the driver of a freight train applied emergency braking at a speed of 60 km/h after a passenger car drove onto the railway track. A collision was avoided. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. The information was forwarded to law enforcement agencies.
On July 9, on the Tobol – Aitekebi section, a freight train driver traveling at a speed of 75 km/h applied emergency braking when a tractor drove onto a regulated crossing. A collision was avoided.
Another incident occurred on July 10 on the Tobol – Zhitikara section. A train driver applied emergency braking at a speed of 65 km/h due to a Toyota car driving onto the crossing. The incident was caused by the driver violating traffic regulations.
Dangerous situations arise not only due to violations of regulations. Sometimes the cause is a technical malfunction of the vehicle. However, for a train driver, the situation is equally dangerous in both cases, as a train cannot be stopped instantly.
On August 12, on the Karaganda-Sortirovochnaya – Astana section, a Volkswagen car stopped directly on a crossing due to a clutch failure. The train, weighing over 1.1 thousand tons, was traveling at a speed of 76 km/h. The driver applied emergency braking and prevented a collision. Railway workers and drivers promptly cleared the track. The train was delayed by 10 minutes.
On July 19, on the Almaty-1 – Saryozek section, a long car carrier trailer suddenly stopped on the roadway at the Baiserke – Kairat crossing due to a breakdown. The train driver, traveling at a speed of 56 km/h, applied emergency braking 150 meters ahead and prevented a collision.
On July 14, at Makhambet station, the driver of a city transit bus on route No. 62 failed to yield the right-of-way to a group of train cars that were being shunted forward at a speed of about 3 km/h. The driver fled the scene. There were no injuries, and no damage to the rolling stock was recorded. The information was forwarded to the police.
KTZ reminds drivers that a railway crossing is a place where a driver's mistake can cost lives. Before a crossing, it is essential to reduce speed, ensure safety, and strictly comply with traffic lights and barrier signals. If a vehicle breaks down on the tracks, it is necessary to clear the crossing as quickly as possible and report the incident to emergency services.
A train, unlike a car, cannot stop within a few meters. Therefore, the only safe option is to refrain from driving onto the tracks when movement is prohibited, and always yield the right-of-way to the train.
