Journalists were briefed on the causes of railway accidents.

22-09-2025

A media meeting with Serik Aikynbekov, Executive Director for Security at the Main Line Directorate, a branch of NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy JSC, was held on the Burabay Express electric train. The speaker discussed the company's measures to ensure rail safety and answered journalists' questions.

According to KTZ, in the first eight months of 2025, there were 44 collisions with people, resulting in 27 fatal injuries. Thirty-nine percent of the offenders were intoxicated, 36% were crossing the tracks in unauthorized places or while wearing headphones, 14% crossed under train cars, and 11% were suicides. Among the injured were four children aged 1.5 to 4 years old, who were on the tracks without adult supervision. Serik Aikynbekov urged parents to explain to their children the rules of conduct on the railway and not to leave them alone. Compared to the same period last year, the number of collisions has decreased by 29%.

The speaker noted that track fencing does not fully guarantee safety, as residents intentionally damage structures and violate regulations. Specifically, in the Shymkent branch, on the fully fenced Korgasyn-Shymkent-Kyzylsay section, there have been seven collisions in two years. A total of 211 km of fencing has been erected along the tracks, covering 26 stations and three sections. Fencing is required on an additional 242 km. Construction of 73.6 km of fencing is planned for 2026-2027. Over the past eight months, locomotive crews, thanks to their professionalism, have prevented more than 77 accidents. Overall, 124 accidents have been recorded at level crossings over the past five years, and 16 in the first eight months of 2025. The main causes of accidents are driver haste and failure to comply with traffic regulations.

To improve safety at crossings, KTZ is implementing video surveillance systems. This measure has reduced accidents at the Karaganda-Maykuduk crossing by 2.4 times and at the Chemolgan-Aksengir crossing by 9 times. Cameras are currently installed at 44 crossings. Akimats have been instructed to install 163 photo and video recording systems for violations and to review the construction of 60 overpasses.

According to legislation, the construction and operation of transport and engineering infrastructure facilities falls within the purview of local executive authorities. In this regard, KTZ is providing assistance by providing technical specifications for the construction of overpasses and pedestrian bridges.

To date, KTZ has issued technical specifications for the construction of 40 road overpasses, seven of which have already been built. Technical specifications have also been issued for the construction of 22 pedestrian bridges. The company is independently implementing projects to build 52 overpasses, which will be transferred to KazAvtoZhol.

Furthermore, routine repairs have been completed on 41 pedestrian bridges, 128 pedestrian crossings, and 247 level crossings.

KTZ NC JSC will continue to implement a range of measures aimed at improving traffic safety and preventing accidents on the railway.
