Flood prevention measures are being carried out on the railway

24-02-2025

With the approach of spring, work is actively underway in the Kostanay region to prepare the railway infrastructure for the flood period. Specialists from all track sections of the region ensure the cleaning of culverts and the preparation of channels for the drainage of melt water. Regular monitoring of the infrastructure condition is carried out, including inspections of tracks, bridges and other objects. Daily inspections of dangerous areas are organized. Track section employees check dams and reservoirs, ensuring prompt response to emerging threats. The audit apparatus conducts round-the-clock monitoring of train traffic safety, which allows for prompt response to any situation. The warning system for passengers and employees will be checked.

As noted by the regional chief auditor of the KTZ traffic safety department for the Kostanay section, Alibek Makhambet, flood prevention measures are key to ensuring the safety of train traffic and maintaining the reliability of rail transportation. In addition, last summer, work was carried out to build and repair protective dams and embankments along the tracks, as well as to update drainage systems to drain melt water from the tracks and stations. Storm drains and drainage ditches are repaired annually. Flood evacuation plans are also developed and flood drills are conducted for personnel.

"Long-term strategies have been developed that take into account climate change and potential threats. All activities are integrated into a single risk management system, and their implementation requires close cooperation with government agencies, environmental organizations and local communities," said Alibek Makhambet.

For reference: the total length of railway tracks in the Kostanay region is about 3,000 km, including 600 km of station tracks, more than 1,600 turnouts and more than 150 guarded and unguarded crossings. There are almost 260 railway bridges and more than 500 culverts in the region. The greatest danger is the accumulation of melt water in 14 reservoirs, lakes and rivers. There are four track sections in the region, and special anti-erosion trains are formed at the key stations of Arkalyk, Yesil, Arka and Kostanay to combat the risk of floods.
