The seaport of Aktau has determined the conceptual directions of development

28-03-2024

At the moment, the port of Aktau is capable of processing up to 70 thousand twenty-foot containers (TEU) per year. This allows us to meet the needs of exporters, importers and service transit cargo flow. It is expected that after updating the reloading equipment fleet in 2025, this figure will increase to 100 thousand TEU per year.

The development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), the North-South corridor and other directions can increase traffic volumes through the port of Aktau fivefold in the medium term.
According to a preliminary assessment of future volumes carried out by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, subject to the development of transport and logistics capacities, the increase in volumes along the Caspian hub in the period from 2030 to 2035. will be at least 1 million TEU containers per year.

Also, according to the World Bank, in order to increase the attractiveness of the TITR corridor, a combination of greater efficiency through better coordination, logistics and the introduction of digital technologies, as well as investments in the medium term, is needed.

The implementation of these measures will allow the volume of transportation to triple to 11 million tons by 2030. The largest share of transit cargo volumes will come from trade between Europe and Kazakhstan, as well as between Europe and China. At the same time, about 4 million tons will be determined by the projected demand for container transportation.

Large players in the global transport logistics market, such as the Chinese ports “Lianyungang Port”, “Shandong Port Group”, logistics platforms “Xi’an Dry Port” and Urumqi, “Rhenus” are already showing interest in participating in the development of the logistics capacities of the Aktau port. (Germany), Abu-Dhabi Ports (UAE), PSA International (Singapore), Albayrak Group (Turkey), as well as the Khave company (Iran), considering expanding the geography of their transhipment points within the corporate network routes.

Based on a preliminary analysis of the current state, external factors and opportunities, strategic priorities and objectives for the development of the transport and logistics complex of the republic, the Aktau seaport has identified the main conceptual directions of development:

1. Modernization and reconstruction of existing port facilities.
2. Phased expansion of the port infrastructure at the expense of port areas.
3. Elimination of imbalances in the development of access railways and roads to the seaport.

The implementation of all stages of modernization and development of the port of Aktau will create a developed infrastructure network of off-dock terminals (terminals located in the rear of the port area) under the management of domestic and foreign investors, and will increase the throughput of the sea harbor to 960 thousand TEUs per year.
