Transit transportation accounts for 10% of KTZ's freight turnover

13-12-2025

JSC NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy operates freight transportation across four types of traffic: domestic, export, import, and transit. The share of transit traffic does not exceed 10%, import traffic accounts for 6%, domestic traffic for 56%, and export traffic for 28%. These figures indicate a relatively small volume of transit traffic within the overall freight turnover structure.

Transit rail shipments across the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan are traditionally carried out along international routes: China – Europe/Central Asia, Russia/Belarus – China and in the reverse direction, Russia – Central Asia, as well as via the TITR (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route) and North–South corridors.

Transit traffic volume demonstrates stable growth: in 2024, it amounted to 27.5 million tons, and as of the results for 11 months of 2025, it has reached 27.9 million tons.

The main nomenclature of transit cargo includes petroleum products, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, chemicals, mineral fertilizers, grain, construction materials, iron ore, timber, machinery and equipment, as well as foodstuffs.
